NORTH BEND, Ore.—(April 5, 2013)—The University of Oregon Repertory Dance
Company, the touring company of the UO Department of Dance, is celebrating
its sixth year in residence at North Bend High School and North Bend Middle School.
The residency, scheduled for April 24-27, represents a long-standing partnership
between the UO and the North Bend public school system. As part of the residency,
the UORDC will engage with area high school and middle school students
in four days of workshops and demonstrations.
In addition to working with the students, the residency will include an event that
is open to the public. On Saturday, April 27 at 10 a.m., the UORDC will offer a
free community master class by UO dance faculty member Rita Honka in the
gymnasium of North Bend High School, 2323 Pacific Ave, North Bend. The event
is free and open to the public, and appropriate for anyone age twelve or older,
regardless of dance experience.
At the same time, UORDC dancers will lead a separate dance class for children
under age twelve in the high school dance studio, also free of charge. The residency
experience will give UO dance students the opportunity to serve as ambassadors of
the UO’s challenging and innovative dance program, and will allow coastal students
and community members to interact with performing artists studying in a rigorous
college setting.
The company will also tour to Central Point, Ore. in May for a residency at the
Crater Renaissance Academy. The tour will be kicked off by the UORDC’s annual
“at home” concert, scheduled for 8 p.m. on April 19 and 20 in the Dougherty Dance
Theatre on the third floor of the Gerlinger Annex on the UO campus in Eugene, and
featuring imaginative and athletic choreography by UO faculty and students, as well
as guests artists.

The company thoroughly enjoyed the time spent teaching, performing, and getting to know students at North Bend High School and the opportunity to share their passion for dance. The time spent on tour is extremely valuable for all involved. The company members gain real experience lead by their incredible directors, the high school students receive quality time and training with older students, and the community is built up by the integration of new art. Company dancer Olivia Shaw says, "This first tour was an amazing time to bond as a company as well as reach out to another dancing community and share in the excitement of movement. As growing dancers we are gaining so much knowledge and rich experience and I'm so thankful for UORDC."
